"The Leader in Me" Presentation, September 21st Exciting things are happening at Fouse!! Mr. Stranges and the entire staff have been investigating a school-wide character development program that would enrich and enhance the experiences our children have at Fouse. By conducting school visits and a staff Book Study, they have found a program that focuses on our children being leaders in their own peer environment. It’s called “The Leader in Me” and it’s written by Stephen Covey. Many of you may be familiar with Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” - this is a program that is focused specifically on schools and children. The Covey Organization will be coming to Fouse on Wednesday, September 21st at 6:30pm, to share more about their program, the implementation and the value they can deliver. If Fouse implements this program, it will require support and commitment from the PTO, the students, the staff and the entire Fouse community, so PLEASE come join us to learn more, ask questions and become informed. As a PTO, we want to share this decision with ALL of our Fouse families. A flyer with more information about the meeting on the 21st is also attached. If you have any questions, please contact Erica Wares, PTO President, at [email protected]. Community Coffee Chats with Dr. Kellogg Westerville City School District (WCSD) Superintendent Dr. John R. Kellogg and members of the district’s leadership team will hold a series of “Community Coffee Chats” to discuss recent progress and future considerations for the district, as well as answer questions about the district’s levy renewal on the November 8, 2016, ballot. Community Coffee Chats will be held as follows: · 7 p.m. on September 15, 2016, at Pointview Elementary School, 720 Pointview Drive · 7:15 a.m. on September 19, 2016, at Panera Bread (north), 782 North State Street · 7:15 a.m. on October 14, 2016, at Java Central, 20 South State Street · 7:15 a.m. on October 27, 2016, at Huber Ridge Elementary School, 5757 Buenos Aires Boulevard Kellogg said casual meeting opportunities such as this are important because the formality of visiting or calling the district’s offices, or signing up to speak at a Board of Education meeting, at times can be intimidating. “We want people to feel comfortable, which is why we’re taking the show on the road, so to speak,” Kellogg explained. “We’re hopeful that people will take advantage of this opportunity and we look forward to seeing everyone there.” Watering New Trees on the Playground - Volunteers Needed As you may know, the PTO was able to purchase 7 shade trees for the playground last year! These trees are still new and need weekly watering. It can be a lengthy task (an estimated 2-3 hours each week) but well worth it for the years of shade and enjoyment that it will bring our students! When volunteering, you are welcome to bring your children and pets to play and run around. If any of your or your family members are interested in helping, we would truly appreciate it! Hand Sanitizer Donations Requested Our lunch/recess schedules have been adjusted slightly this year and some grades now go to recess first and then come in for lunch after. This means that they class doesn’t have the opportunity to wash hands before they eat. Thankfully, our Duty Aides have been on top of our students' safety, health and well-being and have been hand sanitizing the kids. In order to keep this going throughout the year, we’d like to ask families to donate large bottles of hand sanitizer. If you would like to donate, please send in hand sanitizer with your student; they are asked drop it off in the office. Thanks very much for your help with this! Help Wanted: Library Volunteers Library volunteers are critical to helping all of our Fouse students have a positive experience in our library. The library is open on A, B, D and F days. Library volunteers can choose which days they want to help. They are not required to commit to any specific schedule and background checks are not required. If you are available to help in the library, please use this link to sign up for specific day(s) and time(s): http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040c4aafa728a64-sign Please contact our Media Specialist, Mrs. Meta, at [email protected], with any questions. Start Gathering Your Box Tops - Fall Contest Starts Soon! The Fall Box Tops Contest will be getting underway soon, so it's time to start gathering the Box Tops you've been collecting all summer! Contest details will be sent home the last week in September so please keep an eye out for that flyer. The contest runs through Thursday, October 20th. Thanks in advance for your participation! Girl Scouts Recruitment Night, September 12th If you are interested in getting involved in Girl Scouts this year, please attend this informational meeting at Westerville North High School from 7-8pm. http://www.wcsoh.org/docs/district/virtualbackpack/half_sheet_flyers_2016_fillable_2_per_sheet_template.pdf New Birthday Treat Policy As communicated by Mr. Stranges last week, we have a new birthday treat policy. Following is a brief summary: In an effort to nurture healthy choices and to strengthen our school-wide commitment to wellness, we will be implementing new practices for individual student celebrations (birthdays, moving to a new school, etc.) and we will no longer allow students to distribute edible treats for these events. Instead, we have identified other celebration options. Below are our school’s approved choices for alternatives to food treats: · Donate a book to your child’s classroom or to our school library’s Birthday Book Club. You may want to contact your child’s teacher for book suggestions. · Donate an indoor recess game to your child’s classroom. · Distributed small tokens such as stickers, birthday pencils, or pencil toppers to the class. · Provide an autograph book or tee shirt for your child that classmates can sign. We appreciate your partnership as we implement our new school practices. Please note that any food-item sent to school will NOT be opened or distributed and will be returned home with the child. We will continue to have school wide celebrations such as the Fall Party, Winter Party and Valentine Party, at which we will continue to share nutritious snacks and will allow classrooms to share some treats. Should you have further questions, please feel free to contact the school office.
